Launceston Fire Station needs you!

Launceston Fire Station is one of a number of locations around Cornwall where new firefighters are needed. Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is after a number of new on-call firefighters to ensure that each call out is attended by a fully crewed vehicle in the shortest possible time.

The other stations where new recruits are needed are Camborne, Fowey, Liskeard, Looe, Lostwithiel, Polruan and Torpoint.

On-Call firefighters (they used to be called 'retained') are fully trained part time firefighters. There are more than 400 across Cornwall at the moment and most stations rely on them for all their cover as the number of full-time stations is very limited.

Equipped with a beeper, on-call firefighters respond to emergency calls and have to be within 4 minutes of their local fire station during their on-call hours. That makes people who work close to the fire station especially needed. The service is particularly looking for people who can provide 24/7 cover or cover during the 7am to 7pm shifts.

In order to apply you have to be over 17 and a half (when you enter employment after training you have to be at least 18) and physically fit. You also need to live and/or work close to the first station.

For the past two years I have been a member of the informal Council committee overseeing the fire service and have met many of our full-time and part-time firefighters. They are an incredible group and really enjoy their work. I'd encourage anyone even vaguely interested to apply.
